The European Championship officially begins tonight at nine o’clock in the evening. Germany and Scotland then play the opening match.
It looks like the football craze is finally starting to take off. The European Football Championship kicks off tonight in Munich, with Germany taking on hosts Scotland.
There is already a crowd in the host city, but fan zones are also open to fans elsewhere in Germany.
There was a commotion in the fan zone in Berlin. The area was evacuated after an abandoned backpack was found.
German media reported that a man was arrested for leaving luggage at the entrance to the fan zone in the Reichstag, the parliament building in Berlin.
The police are checking whether there are explosives in the backpack. A team of explosives and forensic experts is present at the site.
A police spokesman told Bild newspaper: βFor safety, a safe zone has been demarcated.β βThe backpack is now being checked. It is also possible that someone did not take the backpack to the fan zone because the backpack is larger than the permitted size.
The fan zone was launched again shortly before 7pm. The incident clearly shows that the security forces in Germany are on high alert for the security of the European Championship.
Berlin’s fan zone has been temporarily closed and evacuated after police discovered a suspicious package. A man was arrested, according to local police sources. Set for imminent reopening. A crowd of 10,000 spectators are expected to watch the opening match tonight.@talkSPORT pic.twitter.com/mtB72rBCjy
