Jan Vertonghen disagreed with the ruling against RWDM. He thought there was no punishment.
In half an hour on Saturday, Sporting Anderlecht had already settled the match against RWDM. The third goal for the Purple & White team came from a penalty kick by Kasper Dolberg.
Small problem: When Sousa fouled Vertonghen, the RSCA captain got up very quickly and saw the referee pointing to the penalty kick. He then looked at referee LaForge and indicated his disagreement with the decision.
Bookout believes there was no penalty
This gesture sparked some discussion on social media, and the player in question even expressed his opinion on the matter after the match. His choice to intervene in such a decision did not satisfy the former Belgian official: Alexander Bouchot.
He spoke on RTBF: “Vertonghen doesn't need the referees to intervene. Even if he says it wasn't a penalty. There are four of them on the pitch. They don't need the players involved in discussions about decisions on the pitch.”
He was clear, believing no penalty was awarded given the “very light” contact between Souza and Vertonghen.
