The Space Force comedy series will be ending after two seasons, but luckily, there’s plenty of space-related content on Netflix. Documentaries, series, movies, etc. Here are ten tips for lovers of all things space.
1. Gravity
Gravity is a visual image in which a space shuttle is destroyed by a chain reaction. In this haunting story by Alonso Cuaron, we see how a woman played by Sandra Bullock must live in space. What is so much appreciated about this story that has you on the edge of your seat from start to finish is that it tells us precisely what could happen to space travel today. It is based on a theory written by Donald Kessler about how space debris causes collision after collision. And for the tech enthusiasts among us: The movie was made almost entirely using computer animation.
2. The Solar System: Secrets of the Universe
We recently wrote about the many planets outside our solar system, but do you really know all about our neighboring planets within our solar system? In the documentary Solar System: The Secrets of the Universe, you’ll discover more about the moons and planets around us.
3. Black holes: the edges of everything we know
Black hole. It’s one of the coolest things in space. There is a lot of mystery surrounding these objects: Scientists continue to work on them. Even our galaxy has a giant black hole at its center, created when massive stars exploded under their own weight. know more? Then watch Black Holes: The Edge of All We Know, which takes a deep dive into these mysterious alien objects.
4. Challenger: The Last Journey
The Challenger: The Final Flight docuseries tells the story behind the tragic collapse of the space shuttle Challenger. In 1986, 7 astronauts lost their lives in an accident with this space shuttle. This documentary reflects on these people, as well as a look at the entire Challenger space program and the impact it has had – and continues to have – on space travel.
5. Strange Worlds
Alien worlds have less to do with the inhabitants of Mars than with how life evolved on exoplanets. What if there is a little bit of gravity, for example, how does that affect potential life? It’s all hypothetical of course, but it teaches you about the different planets and the impact that certain planetary properties can have on life.
6. Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space
Last year, Inspiration4 took off and that was a big mission for SpaceX. It was Elon Musk’s first major commercial civilian flight. In the documentary on the topic, we follow the launch in advance, but we also look at how the astronauts fared afterward.
7. Back to space
Academy Award winners Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin took a fascinating look at the collaboration between SpaceX and NASA with Return to Space. In this you basically see the flight that SpaceX has taken to actually get people to the International Space Station and we especially see a lot of Elon Musk and how he’s running things, which is really interesting to discover anyway.
8. The First Man
One of our biggest accomplishments in space is Armstrong’s first steps on the moon. In the feature film First Man, Ryan Gosling plays an American astronaut and a map has been drawn of what it should be like for him to participate in the important Apollo missions. But also how it is for his family when she sees her beloved husband and father embark on the most dangerous journey of his life.
9. Don’t search
Don’t Seek might not be about space so much, but it’s more about what happens on Earth when we encounter a mysterious space problem. This awesome movie will have you staring at the picture in a stunned stupor, just wanting to yell, “Listen, right?!” This movie isn’t a very clever space documentary, but it does give you a funny way of seeing what happens when a problem from space comes to Earth.
10. Interstellar
Interstellar is a movie that you should pay attention to, because it is a complex story in which some of the more mysterious and elevated themes are not avoided. At the same time, the science is getting more and more clear about space travel in a movie so beautiful, it has won several Academy Awards.
Enough space adventures for you to experience, on Netflix alone. Have fun!
