Novak Djokovic convincingly started the Masters 1000 in Madrid. World No. 1 was again too strong for Gail Monfils, good for his 18th win in a row against the Frenchman.
Gael Monfils must have sighed deeply when he saw Novak Djokovic’s name emerging as a contender in Madrid. They have already faced each other 17 times, and the Serbian has already won 17 times.
The Frenchman couldn’t change that in Madrid either. Djokovic won 6-3 6-2 after an hour and a half of play. With an 18-0 against Monfils, Djokovic immediately wrote an amazing record to his name. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, among others, never skip 17-0 against a single opponent.
This is Djokovic’s first match after losing the Belgrade final to Andrei Rublev last Sunday. In the round of 16, Djokovic will face either Scotland’s Andy Murray (ATP 78), who picked up a wild card, or Canada’s Denis Shapovalov (ATP 16).
Djokovic has already won the prestigious Madrid Championship three times, in 2011, 2016 and 2019.
