The incident occurred Monday afternoon (local time) at the Sandman Signature Hotel downtown. Authorities say it was likely a gas explosion. Pictures and television images show a large amount of rubble in the streets near the hotel.
Some prepared attendees were able to rescue people from the basement of the hotel, where a restaurant is located. Construction work was taking place at this Asian restaurant at the time of the explosion.
The hotel and some nearby buildings had to be evacuated. “There is a smell of gas in the area, and there are windows and other things broken outside of the building,” Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman Craig Trojasik said.
Local channel Fox 4 News said that at least 21 people were injured. One person is said to be in critical condition, and four of the victims are said to be in serious condition. The rest suffered minor injuries, the local fire department said.
According to the hotel's website, the building has 245 guest rooms and was built in 1920.
