In Saudi Arabia, more than 28,000 women have applied for a job as a train driver for the Spanish company Renfe. It is the first time that a woman in the conservative Arab country has been able to practice this profession.
Observers say that the high interest in job vacancies indicates how much the status of women in the country has changed in a short time. Since 2018, only women are allowed to drive a car alone in Saudi Arabia.
The selected 30 will receive a one-year paid internship. They will take the wheel of the high-speed train between the cities of Makkah and Madinah. The hst line is built by Spanish Renfe, which also offers on-line train service.
Until recently, Saudi women’s jobs were limited to jobs in the education and medical sector, among other things. After all, they had to adhere to strict gender segregation rules. Currently, women have a 33 percent share in the Saudi labor market. This is doubling in five years.
