At the end of August, Basketball Belgium opened an investigation into possible fraud in the organization of 3×3 tournaments. Meanwhile, a file has been submitted to the Federal Police’s Sports Fraud Unit.
Meanwhile, Belgian Basketball Association, Wallonie-Bruxelles de Basketball and Vlaanderen Basketball Association have collected available information about the alleged 3×3 basketball fraud and are considering a further approach to the file, the statement said.
“The federations want this case to be thoroughly investigated and in this regard have contacted the Federal Police Sports Fraud Cell. The criminal complaint is accompanied by an internal disciplinary investigation into Flanders Basketball.”
As long as investigations are underway, according to Basketball Belgium, the information available is not enough to suspend players. Thus, Thibaut Verfort, Rafael Bogarts, Terry Marin and Nick Seles, who finished fourth at the Olympic Games, can participate in the European Championships in Paris (10-12 September).
Jean Van Lanchot, head of Belgian Basketball, asserts that there is (yet) no solid evidence against the 3×3 lions. “But we think an investigation is necessary. That’s how we ended up with the sports fraud cell.”
“We’ve tried to gather evidence, but we have limited resources. We can’t do a home inspection, so to speak. So this step seemed to us to be the only reasonable solution.”
“There is still a presumption of innocence. We’ll see what comes out of the investigation. For now, it’s just coffee.”
