4Gamers – Opinion | 2023 is the best year ever in gaming

Was 2023 the best year ever for video games? A question you can’t really answer without ranking all the games in all the years and then providing the most objective assessment on that basis. But this is a column and I’m a bit lazy, so we won’t do any of that. I’m going to be nice and personal and throw in a lot of exaggeration (maybe, if I’m not too lazy for that too).

Now, spin it how you want, 2023 has been an exceptional year for gaming: Baldur’s Gate 3, The Legend of Zelda: Kingdom Tearsnew edition of Resident Evil 4, Marvel Spider-Man 2, Super Mario Bros. miracle And Street Fighter 6 They were all games released this year. Then I won’t mention a few of them and we haven’t talked about smaller games like cocoon, Dave the diver And Sea of stars. If you’re a gamer and you dare say in 2023 that you don’t have a single good game to play, then you belong on a funeral pyre or something (aha, I’m not too lazy to exaggerate here and there).

“If you’re a gamer and you dare say in 2023 that you don’t have a single good game to play, then you belong on a funeral pyre or something.”

I’ve been playing games for over 30 years, been in “the world” for about 15 years and can’t really remember a better year. It may have happened, but it happened a long time ago. Probably sometime in the mid-90s when we got two great consoles on our plates with the Nintendo 64 and the first PlayStation. But again, the sheer number of absolute covers we received this year was absolutely ridiculous.

Not that I want to complain, but I will complain a little. Why were there so many? Can’t all these publishers now agree on when the best new games will be released? There are only so many hours in the day. For example, is it really necessary to get a Super Mario Bros. game? Wonder and Spider-Man 2 released on the same day?

Okay, back to my original point: is 2023 the best year ever for gamers? I think so and I say that knowing that there will be a lot of people who will be happy to contradict me, but this is my column, very nice!

I have this opinion because over the years I’ve been pretty successful at playing most of the games I really wanted to play. This is much less the case this year. Almost all the great indie games have been dropped into the backlog, but I also haven’t touched the big games like Baldur’s Gate 3 (perhaps fortunately, because for all the hours I could have spent on it, I got to play ten other games). . Not to mention Nintendo’s massive backlog of games that grows year after year.

“There are two groups that might think 2023 is the biggest year ever: Call of Duty fans and FIFA players.”

Oddly enough, there are two groups that might think 2023 is the biggest year ever: Call of Duty fans and FIFA players (hello, EA Sports FC…). They’re two groups that essentially play one game year-round and are very disappointed by the latest addition to their favorite series. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and EA Sports FC 24 both received some of the lowest scores in living memory for a new game in their franchise.

For these people, 2023 isn’t the best year ever in gaming, but as we’ve previously established, this is my column and I think about it very differently.

Therefore, I can only hope for one thing, which is that 2024 will have everything to match or at least come close to 2023, because then we may gradually be able to talk about a new golden age. Interlocking fingers.
