Anderlecht beat Club Brugge on Sunday after a dramatic turnaround at the end of the game, with the match only ending in a 1-2 draw in extra time. The 90 Minutes broadcast panel noted the difference in centre-backs when Brugge's goals were conceded: “It's worrying in certain areas.”
“It was not Vertonghen-Debast in terms of level,” Philip Goss launched the discussion.
Gilles de Coster praised the “warrior” in Vertonghen, who at one point made a victory gesture after a successful tackle: “I thought this was very typical and I found the difference with the other side shocking.”
“And I think Vertonghen is not doing it for the public, but for himself. He is very proud and happy.”
Jos knows what makes Anderlecht so strong: “The axis. Starting with Schmeichel, Vertonghen and Debast. Debast is playing at the highest level. I'm starting to think more and more that you should also put them together in the national team.”
“Who plays so well abroad that they can say: ‘I'm better than Debast in a duet with Vertonghen?’ Then I suppose Alderweireld is no longer qualified.”
“It's a great advantage to have these two guys playing together at their club. I think Vertonghen's confidence in Debast has also increased significantly.”
“There's also a sense of pride in that, that the boy next to you is getting stronger at what he was a little bit weaker at. Because you shouldn't be teaching him how to play football.”
“I think Debast is everything when it comes to football. In one training match, Debast let someone in once, which is true, but I think you also benefit a lot from that when you play football.”
The committee will also look for who could be to the left and right of the central Depaste-Vertonghen duo. Gus: “I didn't think the stage left was bad.” Dan Heymans dropped Castro Montes' name: “The way he moved from Ghent to Union is a real loss for Ghent. I think he deserves national selection.”
