Michael Fawcett, the former director of the charity, has previously resigned from his position after being accused of promising citizenship and giving a knighthood to billionaire Mahfouz Merhi Mubarak bin Mahfouz. British media previously reported that Fawcett had told Mahfouz that the Royal Charities were “delighted and willing” to help.
Several employees then resigned, including Chairman Douglas Connell. In a statement to British media, he said he was “shocked and appalled” by allegations that the organization was involved in “crooked practices”. “No other directors and I were aware of such activity and have requested a rigorous, independent investigation,” his statement said.
According to a number of British media, Clarence House said in September it was “not aware” of citizenship in exchange for donations. The Prince of Wales also said he would fully cooperate with the investigation. According to the statement, the research team is in contact with the Prince’s Foundation “regarding the findings of an independent investigation into fundraising practices.”
Police said the charity had submitted a number of related documents. The Prince Foundation was founded in 1986 by Prince Charles. The organization is committed to promoting architecture.
