Last Thursday, Ukrainian news agency Unian organized a press conference with three captured Russian soldiers. Photos of the event are now shared online en masse. The powerful message of emotional leader Astakhov Dmitry Mikhailovich is especially exciting.

Mikhailovich says his doubts about the whole process grew even more when he saw two of his favorite boxers – Oleksandr Usyk and Vasily Lomachenko – committing to fighting the Russian army. “I am ashamed that we came to this country, to this region, to the territory of Ukraine,” said Mikhailovich.

The Russian shows his feelings when he wants to apologize in person: “I can’t find the words to say sorry to the Ukrainian people.” He adds that he will “understand” unless Russia ever forgives.

And he strongly urges the Ukrainians to let the Russian soldiers live: “Many of them are completely ashamed. They do not want war. ” Mikhailovich also called for soldiers to be sent “alive” to Russia so that they could tell their compatriots “what happened here.”

And he adds: “I sincerely hope that you will have mercy on the people who come to you with their hands up, or for those who are injured. We must not sow death. It’s better to cherish life.”

For the Russian forces still fighting, he has a powerful message: “I beg you, stop before it’s too late… Russia cannot win here.”

His testimony reflects the statements of other Russian prisoners who were interrogated by Ukrainian forces. They say they were told that the Ukrainian government had been overthrown and that they would be considered “liberators” – with little resistance from the Ukrainian people. But the reality on the ground is quite different. The Ukrainian army and the population resisted fiercely.

The statements of the two captured Russian soldiers could not be verified, and these statements may have been made under some degree of duress. Although the testimony of Mikhailovich seems courageous and honest.

The consistency with which the same story is told – by Russian soldiers from different units who are fighting in other parts of the country and have not had time to match their stories – is astounding.
