Van Moer Standard designer Henri Depireux dies | Basic

Football-loving Liege in mourning. With Henri Depireux (78), one of the legendary footballers from Fiery Stede, who wore both the Standard and FC Liège colors, passed away. He was also a Belgian international twice.

At the height of his life, Depireux was a talented playmaker/forward. He broke through at the age of 19 in FC Liège, but spent his glory years at Standard. He played football there for three seasons, from 1968 to 1971, and won the Belgian national title three times with Team Roche.

Next, France coach Rene Hauss drew on the formidable talent of Wilfried van Meyer in midfield and was backed by iron defence with Christian Piot, Jackie Perlet, Léon Jake, Louis Pilot, Janot Thiessen and Nico Dewalk the most accurate. Up front, captain Leon Semling took charge of the goals along with top forwards such as Erwin Costede, Antal Nagy or Sylvester Takac. The kind Henri Depireux did the same for three years, who became the successor to the legendary Roger Claessen for the Standard audience.

Depiroux scored 20 goals in 70 games during his three years at Sclessin. However, he did not break into the national team, as captain Paul van Himst prevented him. Depireux stopped out for two international matches. In the selection for the World Cup in Mexico, Club Brugge’s Pierre Kartos was selected by national coach Raymond Gothals over Depiroux as a replacement for Van Himest.

In 1971, Depireux left the record-breaking Triple Champion team. He moved to Brussels, to Racing White, which later merged into RWD Molenbeek. When the merged club Brussels became champions in 1975, Debeeraux did indeed return to Liege, to his parent club FC Liege, where he “bulged” for two more seasons before embarking on a long coaching career. This brought him from Liege’s smaller clubs Bas Oha and Taylor via Union Namen to Winterslag, where he secured his retention in 1982, before embarking on an overseas tour with Belenenses (Portugal), Bellinzona (Switzerland), Metz and Red Star. Paris France). He also became a national coach for Cameroon and Congo, among others. In 2000, Depiroux returned to Standard for a while, replacing ailing Tomislav Ivic at a joint job with former teammate Jan Tessin.
