£768 million sued Apple in the UK over iPhone delays

Before the Court of Competition Appeal in London, the consumer watchdog accused Apple of reducing the performance of old iPhones in order to “avoid the recall and expensive repairs to older devices” through updates. The lawsuit aims to compensate up to 25 million users in the UK.

Apple apologized in December 2017, admitting that it had intentionally slowed down some of its iPhones to make up for their old battery and prevent devices from shutting down unexpectedly. The company denied any attempt to time-out programme.

Since then, the tech giant has been sued in several countries. And in the United States, the company was ordered to pay compensation of $ 500 million (477 million euros) to owners of older models. In France, Apple was fined 25 million euros for failing to warn that updates could slow down older smartphones.

“We have not and will not do anything to intentionally shorten the life of Apple products or impair the user experience” to encourage customers to purchase new products, the manufacturer said in a statement to AFP on Thursday. “Our goal has always been to make products that our customers love, and making iPhones last as long as possible is a big part of that.”
