Carlsberg tests ‘paper’ beer bottle with consumers | environment

Danish brewery Carlsberg will organize a pilot project with “paper” beer bottles in eight European countries. The brewer will deliver 8000 bottles to consumers, customers and others through, for example, festivals and events. The sustainable bottle is tested in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, UK, Poland, Germany and France.

An experiment of this magnitude will allow the brewery to gain consumer feedback, she says. The bottle is completely organic, except for the crown cap.

The Danes have been working for some time on a so-called “fiber bottle”, which can be 100 percent recyclable. The wood fiber bottle has a layer of vegetable plastic (PEF) inside. This allows beer to stay cold longer compared to glass bottles and cans. The plastic was developed by Dutch chemical company Avantium and the two companies have been working together for some time. Previous tests with that bottle were successful.

Avantium has also acquired Carlsberg as a customer for its future plant to produce plant-based plastics. This is a conditional purchase. The Danes want to use this plastic to make the fiber bottle. The stringent Avantium packaging range previously Resilux from Wetteren.
