This was the eighth time that Zeewolde Athletics, in collaboration with the Bas van de Goor Foundation, organized the Zeewolde Diabetes Challenge. Under the guise of ‘walking as medicine’, dozens of participants since 2015 have explored the effect of exercise on your health and well-being.
Injecting less insulin or even stopping insulin at all, but participants who wanted to work on their fitness for other reasons also experienced the effects.
After a period of modification and shorter versions by Corona, another edition launched in March. During a four-month period, the group walked together weekly, aiming to walk 10,000 steps per day for 6 consecutive days at the end of the period. In mid-June, the Four Days Marches already gave a nice warm-up to last week’s Final Challenge Week.
In the absence of challenge groups elsewhere in the region, walkers have had a local increase this year. Supported by regular walking members, a varied route was walked each evening, with the jigsaw puzzle tour as one of the highlights. How well do you know your village? A fun walking activity in which you take many steps unnoticed. On Saturday morning, the challenge was concluded with a final run on the athletics track, followed by an enthusiastic reception from family and friends. Moreover, on September 24 the group will participate in the National Walking Festival organized by the Bas van de Goor Foundation in GelreDome.
The trainers and walkers as well as the participants are looking at a great period. The challenge really made me discover walking. One participant said, It has brought me so many in many ways.
