Swimming is prohibited on Spanish beaches by sharks less than 100 meters from the coast

Fragata, Ribeira, Estaniol and Bassa Rodona: Four beaches in the Spanish tourist city of Sitges had to declare a bathing ban for more than an hour on Thursday. A shark was reported around 12.50pm. A red flag was raised on the four beaches. It was able to land again by 2:30 pm after the shark disappeared from the radar.

It is said to be the mako shark, also known as the shortfin mako shark, which, according to local authorities, is not dangerous. In any case, no attacks on humans have been recorded so far. But shark species is considered one of the fastest species in the world. The animal can reach a speed of 70 kilometers per hour and have a length of 3.5-4 meters.

On July 3, a “smaller” mako shark was seen on the coast of the Grave, a little further away. The divers were then able to photograph the 2.5-meter specimen.

According to the local government, the sighting of shark species twice in such a short time is “remarkable”. The animal has not been captured once in the past ten years and is even classified as endangered on the Mediterranean coast. (sgg)
