Samsung plans to build 11 new chip plants in the US over the next two decades. According to local media, this is evidenced by the applications provided by Samsung. It will include a total investment of $192.1 billion.
Applications have been submitted to the US state of Texas, Writes American Austin Statesman. The documents show that Samsung is considering building factories in various parts of that state. The company also requires tax benefits. If the proposals are approved, the company could receive a total of $4.8 billion in tax credits.
Of the eleven potential plants, nine will be in Taylor, a small town of about 17,000 people 40 kilometers northeast of the Texas capital, Austin. Samsung will allocate approximately $168 billion for this purpose. The other two potential plants will be built in Austin, in which Samsung wants to invest $24.5 billion. The eleven factories provide at least 10,000 direct jobs, the South Korean chipmaker claims.
These expansion plans from Samsung are primarily focused on the long-term. If the plans are implemented, the first plants will be operational by 2034 at the earliest. According to the documents, two factories will not produce their first chips until 2042. Samsung also confirmed in a statement that the submissions do not mean that there are already concrete plans to build the factories. A company spokesman said in a statement to local authorities.
Samsung has been expanding its production capacity for some time, including in the US. The company is currently building chips plant in taylor. The company says it will produce chips there for various purposes, such as the mobile sector, 5G, high performance computing and artificial intelligence. This plant will cover approximately 5 million square meters and is supposed to start operating in 2024. Considerations may relate to the US CHIPS Act, which should unlock $50 billion in subsidies for the semiconductor sector.
