4x100m top seeds fall: US women beat Jamaica, surprise Canada Team USA | Athletics

A surprise in the 4x100m final at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene. In the women’s, the U.S. benefited from an upset against heavy favorite Jamaica, while in the men’s case the U.S. went wrong and Canada took advantage. On the final World Cup day, world titles were also awarded in the javelin, triple jump, 800m and 5,000m, and decathlon top seed David Warner was injured.

Team USA by the last stick change

“If stick changes go well, gold is sure for Americans.” These turned out to be the prophetic words of Sporza commentator Kris Meertens. Only mistakes kept Christian Coleman, Noah Lyles, Elijah Hall and closing runner Marvin Bracy from gold in the 4x100m.

There didn’t seem to be a point in the air, but it still went wrong in the last stick change between Hall and Bracey. The Canadians saw their chance, and the final runner, Andre de Grasse, finished it well in 37:48.

So there was no title extension for the US and they had to make peace with Silver for their own audience. Great Britain defeated Jamaica in the battle for the bronze medal.

Jackson can’t fix Jamaica’s mistakes

In the previous 8 World Cups, the women’s 4x100m world title went to Jamaica 4 times and the USA 4 times. Also in Eugene, it clearly caught Olympic champion and defending champion Jamaica in what promises to be a battle between the two top nations.

But in the first switch, Kemba Nelson and Elaine Thompson-Hera caused immediate chaos, and the last switch between Shelly-Anne Fraser-Pryce and Sherika Jackson didn’t go smoothly.

Jamaica got the gold as Jackson got very close to American Twanisha Terry in the last 100 meters. Jamaica came within 4 hundredths of a new world title, 41 to the USA in 14. The bronze went surprisingly to Germany.

Gold for Olympic champion Korir in the 800m race

Donovan Brazier was absent from the 800m final. The defending US champion was eliminated in the series. But among the top eight: three Kenyans, two Algerians and only one European with Frenchman Gabriel Duval.

Canada’s Marco Arop took the lead but had no way when Emmanuel Corrir turned on his turbo in the last corner. The Tokyo Olympic champion, who suffered a serious car accident in 2018, won in 1’43″71.

Surprise Algerian Djamel Sedjati took silver after a strong final run. Marco Arop was rewarded with a bronze for his head.

Hassan once again grabbed a medal, with Zeke taking the win

Olympic champion Sifan Hassan lost his world title in the 10,000 meters last Saturday to Ethiopia’s Letsanbet Gide, falling just short of the podium. So the Dutch had to put things right at 5,000 meters.

But even now she has clashed with Ethiopian power gangs. There were three of them: Letsonbed Gide, Gutaf Zeke, and David Seyam. Hassan tried the last lap with her familiar acceleration, but once again her pace seemed to drop a bit. Hassan eventually finished sixth.

The 25-year-old Tsegay crowned world champion Gidey’s best work and also gave Ethiopia gold in the 5,000 meters in 14’46 “29 after 10,000 meters. Seyam completed Ethiopia’s victory with bronze, beating Kenya’s Beatrice Sebet for silver.

Anderson Peters fulfills a favorite role in the javelin

In the javelin final, this season’s player of the year, Anderson Peters, lived up to expectations. The 24-year-old Grenadian threw the javelin to a distance of 90.54 meters and proved to be the strongest of the competition.

Tokyo’s Olympic champion India’s Neeraj Chopra finished second with a throw of 88.13m. Czech player Jakub Watledge won bronze with a throw of 88.09 meters.

Peters is only the second javelin thrower to win to extend his world title. With a second gold medal in a row, he follows in the footsteps of none other than John Zelesny. The Czech legend did the same job in 1993 and 1995.

After two silvers, now gold for Picardo

At the 2013 and 2015 World Championships, Pedro Picardo took silver, and in 2019 he even missed a fourth medal. The Olympic champion finally wanted to fill the void in his palm in Eugene and won with flying colors.

The Cuban-born Portuguese won gold with a leap of 17.95m. The other podiums were a copy of the top three finishes at the Tokyo Games, although this time silver went to Burkina Faso’s Fabrice Django Hughes and bronze to China’s Zhu Yaming.

Defending American champion Christian Taylor was caught in the qualifying round.

Warner’s disastrous performance in the decathlon

Damian Warner looked perfect on day one of the decathlon. The Olympic champion was leading after the 100m, long jump, shot put and high jump, but made a mistake in the 400m.

The 32-year-old Canadian felt his left thigh after 100 to 150 meters and went down the track. Warner was allowed to abandon his title dream immediately. In the same series, Ayden Owens-Delerme had a huge upset. The Puerto Rican won in a very sharp 45″07 and therefore leads the decathlon after five parts.
