Netflix has made a small modification to the . file iOSThe application that now transfers users from the application to the website to complete the registration for the subscription.
When they click the new Sign Up button in the Netflix app, a new window pops up letting people know that they are going to a third-party website and “no longer do business with Apple.” It was also first spotted by 9to5 Mac (Opens in a new tab). The message adds that Apple is not responsible for anything that happens to you in the streaming service. If you want a refund or are concerned about the security of the transaction, you need to resolve that with Netflix.
9to5 Mac states that the change has been rolled out worldwide. We called Netflix and asked if they could confirm this. We will update this story when the platform contacts us.
iOS changes
While it is a minor tweak, the updated Netflix app shows that the iOS environment is changing for developers and users alike. It shows that Apple is starting to become more developer friendly as it relaxes strict App Store rules. For the average consumer, signing up for Netflix on iOS has never been easier.
Netflix used to allow people to sign up for the streaming service directly via the iOS app but this option has been removed due to Apple’s 30 percent charge policy (Opens in a new tab) For all in-app purchases. Not only that: Apple will also not allow developers to add an external link to their website to avoid these exorbitant fees. Users first had to purchase a Netflix subscription separately and then download the Netflix app in order to stream. This was not the most difficult task, but it added unnecessary extra steps.
But what was once a difficult base is now beginning to relax.
in March 2022 (Opens in a new tab) Apple has announced a policy change that will allow Reader apps to provide links to their registration pages. Apple’s new stance is driven in part by the push for change. For example, a new law has been passed here in the Netherlands that requires non-iOS payment options for people using dating apps in the Netherlands. also South Korea passed a law in 2021 (Opens in a new tab) Allows developers to bypass Apple fees.
At first glance, it looks like Apple has made the change to its reader apps to avoid future conflicts, but there is one big caveat.
Analysis: What about video games?
The Apple App Store Guidelines specify a Reader app (Opens in a new tab) It is defined as an application that provides a specific type of digital material as its main function. Magazines, newspapers, books, audio, music, and video apps fall under this heading, but video games don’t.
Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney took to Twitter (Opens in a new tab) On this viper in the grass. He complained that since Netflix can now avoid Apple’s “30 percent app tax”, why not video games? Epic Games sued Apple in 2020 over collecting more than 30 percent (Opens in a new tab). The judge ruled the case in favor of Apple, which means that Developers have their own payment systems (Opens in a new tab) From third parties to avoid the charge. The judge’s ruling likely paved the way for a March 2022 policy change, but games still don’t fall under the reader’s app definition.
We asked Apple if there are any plans to expand external link support for video games so that developers can avoid fees. All sent are links to Definition of the reader app (Opens in a new tab). We then asked why video games were not included in the definition, but we have yet to receive a response.
