James Webb Telescope captures stunning new images of the ‘Ring galaxy’

About 500 million light-years away, you can find the Chariot Wheel System. This is a ring-shaped galaxy that was discovered in the mid-20th century. It is the result of a high-speed collision between a large spiral galaxy and a smaller galaxy. Collisions of galactic proportions cause a chain of small events between the respective galaxies. The collision mainly affected the shape and structure of galaxies. The trolley wheel system consists of two rings: a bright inner ring and a surrounding colored outer ring. The two extend outward from the center of the collision. Because of these amazing features, astronomers call it a “ring galaxy,” a structure less common than spiral galaxies like our Milky Way.

The James Webb Space Telescope recently captured new images of this Cartwell galaxy. The particular galaxy has been previously documented by the Hubble Space Telescope, but this time the images are more detailed.

Thanks to the new telescope’s infrared camera, more stars can be seen and the difference between new and older stars is more clear. The new images also provide researchers with better insights into the development of the wagon wheel system.
