“The Hunger Games films have always been lauded for their exceptional cast, and we’re thrilled to continue that tradition with Viola Davis as Volumnia gaul,” Nathan Kahana, president of film company Lionsgate, told The Hollywood Reporter. Producer Nina Jacobson also responded enthusiastically. “From the beginning Viola was our dream, because of the layers of intelligence and passion she was able to bring into every role.” Alternate Director Francis Lawrence described Viola’s character this way: “Dr. Gaul is as cruel as he is creative and as terrifying as he is formidable.”

The cast is formed thanks to the addition of Viola. It was previously known that “West Side Story” star Rachel Ziegler, 21, plays Lucy Graybeard’s character. Coriolanus Snow (Young Man) was also selected. The Gilded Age actor Tom Blythe (27 years old) could take that honor. Other stars already announced include “Game of Thrones” actor Peter Dinklage (53), “West Side Story” actor Josh AndrĂ©s Rivera (27) and “Euphoria” star Hunter Schafer (23).

The film is set before all the events of the “Hunger Games” films and will be entirely devoted to President Coriolanus Snow. Actor Donald Sutherland (87) previously played this role in the original four “Hunger Games” films, but now viewers will get to know his character in a completely different way. The prequel is a film adaptation of “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” by Susan Collins. She had previously written the three “The Hunger Games” books, but decided that Chief Snow’s story was far from over. Fans of the saga will have to be patient for another year. The new version is scheduled to be released only on November 17, 2023.
