Bring the facade inside

This home in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal dates back to the early 1900s, but that doesn’t mean it can’t meet the living comfort that most people desire today. At the same time, it was very important in this renovation project that the residents could still fully experience the original architecture. Inside and out, the building has a great allure.

The renovation of House in Caldas was a collaboration between three different parties, Gonçalo Pacheco Arquitectos, architect Leonardo Marchesi and 3D artist Jorge Mendes. With a common vision, they left the facade of the building as an engineering guide for the three floors and their layout. Remarkably, this is not one large residence, but several two-bedroom apartments. Hence, the main modifications to the existing architecture are the further development of the interconnections in some rooms, as well as the modification of the kitchen. Parallel to the intent to do as little destruction as possible, the overriding goal was to evoke a serene atmosphere that would allow you to experience space in an attentive manner.

Tranquility allows you to optimally experience spaces.

The simple impulse that led to this result can also be seen in the neutral use of colour, scattered and balanced details, as well as the unassuming interior design. In order to correctly reflect the charm of the facade in the interior, the team decided to use the same stone in the kitchen and bathroom. Moreover, such use of materials is not unusual in Portugal. To complete the general atmosphere, the corners of the ceilings are equipped with carefully thought-out lighting that creates the right shades. This way the walls get a dynamic look that allows them to complement the spaces in a calm way. House in Caldas has been transformed and given a simple splendor that shows the original architecture at its best. This collaboration turned out to be a successful project that undoubtedly required a sequel.
