Two armed men brandished knives as they tried to attack Mali Azmi Qaeda’s interim president during prayers at the Grand Mosque in the capital, Bamako. The attack took place during the celebrations of the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha. A French press correspondent said the president had been taken away by security.
The last formal president, Ibrahim Bakr Gesta, or “Ipk”, was elected in 2013 and re-elected in 2018, and was ousted on August 18, 2020 by a military coup. Under international pressure, the military decided to replace a president with civilian power within 18 months. But last May, the colonels arrested the president and prime minister after appointing a new interim government of their choice, imposing Goida as interim head of state. Colonel led two conspiracies in August 2020 and last May.
In March-April 2012, the north of Mali was captured by jihadi groups linked to Al Qaeda, but was largely driven out by an international military program launched in January 2013 at the initiative of a former French colonialist. However, the entire area is out of the control of Malian and French forces and for the work of the United Nations (MINUSMA), which is often the subject of attacks. On June 10, on the sidelines of a NATO summit, Emmanuel Macron announced the end of the “Barcane” operation launched in Mali in 2014.
