Willingen’s winter sports resort, in the German state of Hesse, presents a new tourist attraction: one of the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridges. The construction of the pedestrian bridge entered a critical phase this month. An opening is still planned for this year, towards the end of fall or the beginning of winter.
Willingen is a winter sports resort near Winterberg and is famous for the annual snowboarding competitions in Mühlenkopfschanze. At the end of this year, a tourist attraction should be added to the area: a floating suspension bridge of less than 665 meters that leads hikers up to 100 meters to and from Mühlenkopfschanze to Musenberg. The width of the walking part itself will be about 1.5 meters.
The suspension bridge, named Skywalk Willingen, was built by experts from Swissrope in a Tibetan style, similar to the type of suspension bridges commonly used in the Himalayas. Meanwhile, trusses on either side of the mountain were put into place and the four steel cables were extended over the valley. The next step is the laying of the bridge floor grids and side walls. In total, it comes to the construction of 120 tons. A maximum of 750 people are allowed to cross the bridge at the same time.
register
German media reported that the Willingen Skywalk Bridge, which is just under 665 meters long, will be the longest self-supporting Tibetan-style suspension bridge in the world. Its prototype hangs in Tirol.
This bridge, “Highline 179”, is 406 meters long and about 115 meters high, connecting the ruins of Ehrenberg and Fort Claudia in Reutte. In December 2014, the Guinness Book of Records recognized High Line 179 as the longest Tibetan-style suspension bridge in the world.
The longest pedestrian suspension bridge at Tot Stadium in the world can be found in the Czech Republic. Sky Bridge 721 was opened there in May of this year in Dolny Morava in the northeast of the country. It has a length of 721 meters and a maximum height of 95 meters.
Storm
A special feature of the ‘Skywalk Willingen’ is that the bridge has hydraulic cylinders. This allows the bridge to pull out in a gale and tighten slightly, so that it hangs less in the wind. The bridge will be open all year round, except for storms.
The location of the new bridge suggests that both entrances are very attractive to start more hiking excursions from there, for example to Ettelsberg and neighboring Hochheide or in the direction of Usseln to Graf Stollberghütte.
