TelevisionImelda Staunton, 66, can be seen next month for the first time as Queen Elizabeth in The Crown. The actress is especially hoping that viewers will be satisfied with the release of Season 5 approaching.
“The really nice thing is that people are saying, ‘I’m really looking forward to seeing her in the role of Queen,'” Staunton said in a Netflix press release. “As release approaches, I hope it will live up to audience expectations.”
The fifth series follows the British royal family during the 1990s. A period when much attention at the time was given to marital problems and later the divorce of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Elizabeth Debicki, who plays her, says the many old photos helped her prepare for the role. “The 1990s was the beginning of the 24/7 news cycle, and more and more were videotaped, producing an incredible amount of material that we can now tap into.”
The cast last changed hands in seasons five and six. According to Dominic West, who will play Prince Charles, viewers understand why more and more actors are playing members of the royal family. “I think people really understand why the cast changes every two seasons. This isn’t about impersonation, it’s about character development.”
