The defense system intercepted a rocket from Gaza towards Israel. This was announced by the Israeli army. The attack comes shortly after the official announcement that former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had won the parliamentary elections.
Netanyahu’s right-wing religious camp won 64 of the 120 seats, one seat less than the latest forecast. Outgoing Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s bloc remained at 51 seats. He has already congratulated his opponent on the victory. His crew is now preparing to transfer power.
Likud “Bibi” won 32 seats out of 120, and Yesh Atid came in second with 24 seats. Then comes the extreme right-wing Religious Zionism party, which has fourteen members, “Haaretz” newspaper quoted the election commission as saying.
Netanyahu’s likely coalition partners Shas and United Torah Judaism won 11 and 7 seats, respectively. Defense Minister Benny Gantz’s National Unity won 12 seats. The ruling Labor Party lost four seats.
Longest serving prime minister
Thus, Netanyahu can prepare to return as prime minister. The 73-year-old politician has served as prime minister several times, most recently until June last year for a total of more than 15 years. This makes him the longest serving prime minister in Israel’s history.
This was the fifth time in less than four years that Israelis were able to elect a new parliament. Earlier this year, the current coalition lost its narrow majority in Parliament.
