Iranian demonstrators set fire to Ayatollah Khomeini’s house | Iran

Video footage of the home of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Republic, has been circulating on social media. The building is burning. According to activists, protesters set fires.

According to the activist network 1500 Tasfir, the incident occurred on Thursday evening in the village of Khomeini, Khomeini’s hometown, south of the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Pictures show dozens of people cheering as flames spread. However, Iranian state media denied that the house was set on fire, claiming that a limited number of people had gathered inside the house. The state-run Tasnim news agency said of news of the fire, “This report is a lie… The doors of the house of the late founder of the Great Revolution are open to people.”

Khomeini died in 1989. Since then, the house has been converted into a museum.

His successor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has come under enormous pressure since late September, after protests broke out across the country demanding an end to clerical rule. The protests are still fierce.

Other videos shared by 1,500 Tasfir showed protesters chanting “Death to Khamenei” in several cities. In the city of Chabahar, a street name sign referring to Ayatollah Khomeini was pulled down and destroyed.
