The second file is about the White House archives. When he was not in office, Trump carried several boxes full of documents with him. A 1978 law requires all US presidents to turn over their emails, letters and other working documents to the National Archives.
In January he returned fifteen boxes. After an investigation, federal police suspected he was hiding others at his luxury Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago. FBI agents conducted a surprise raid on August 8 on warrants for “withholding classified documents” and “obstructing a federal investigation” and seized about 30 boxes.
A fierce legal battle ensued over the nature of the seized documents – were they classified, private or classified? – This delayed the proceedings, but here too a federal charge is possible.
Multiple sources tell CNN that both Capitol Storm and the Mar-a-Lago investigation will gather more information and testify before a federal grand jury, the equivalent of our council chamber, in the coming weeks. Prosecutors have issued several new subpoenas in recent days, some as early as next week.
