At least 5 dead, 18 injured in US gay nightclub shooting: ‘Q Club devastated by senseless attack on our community’

A mass shooting took place Saturday through Sunday at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs. At least five people were killed and 18 injured, according to local police.

It is unclear at this time what happened in Colorado Springs. On Saturday night, around midnight (local time), police rushed to the Club Q K nightclub after receiving multiple reports of gunfire, Pamela Castro of the local police said during a brief media briefing. “A person was present at the spot and the facts are now suspect,” he said. It is not known how the person got the power. The suspect was also injured and is being treated at the hospital. It is also not yet certain whether there was a single shooter at the scene, which is under further investigation.

“I can confirm that eighteen people have been injured and five have died. But that number could still change,” he said. Many of the injured were taken to hospital. A further investigation will now be conducted into what transpired. “The FBI is also on site,” it said. “We’ll be here for hours,” Castro said. Mike Smaldino of the local fire department confirmed that 34 firefighters and 11 ambulances were on the scene.

The club confirmed the shooting on Facebook. They write: “Club Q is devastated by this senseless attack on our community. Our prayers and thoughts go out to all those affected and their families and friends. We are grateful for the immediate responses of heroic customers who subdued the shooter and put an end to this hate speech.

Police are currently unable to confirm whether the shooter’s motive was a hate crime.

On June 2, 2016, a gay nightclub was also the target of the largest mass shooting in the United States. Omar Mateen (29) later shot dead 49 people and wounded 53 others in Orlando. The shooter was shot and killed by police hours later.
