Twitter CEO Elon Musk is seeking confrontation with iPhone maker Apple on his private social media. In a long series of tweets, he accused Apple of everything, including censorship. He asks, “Does Apple hate freedom of speech in America?”
Musk makes this assumption because Apple no longer advertises on Twitter — a decision countless other large companies have made as well since Musk ran it and installed an “anything goes, anything goes” approach. Musk also says that Apple is “threatening to kick Twitter off the App Store without telling us why.” This may have something to do with the increase in spam on Twitter, such as racism and hate speech. Apple previously removed apps from the App Store that violated Apple’s rules on moderation and harmful content.
Note: This past weekend, Phil Schiller, the Apple CEO who oversees the App Store, deleted his much-followed Twitter account.
But Musk’s biggest problem seems to be the 30 percent that Apple throws away for in-app purchases. Musk, who wants to make Twitter profitable with all kinds of payment options, is not willing to pay what he calls the “secret tax.” Others, like Spotify and Fortnite maker Epic, have already clashed with Apple over this.
