The judge expresses his discomfort with the whole course of events, in view of the ‘credible allegations’, US media report. After an extensive investigation, US security services concluded that bin Salman had ordered the killing.

The court pointed out that the US Biden administration insists that the prince has political immunity. The lawsuit, filed by Khashoggi’s fiancee, is a last-ditch effort to hold the crown prince accountable for the 2018 murder, according to media reports.

Saudi Arabia’s king decided in September to make the crown prince prime minister, a position usually held by the king himself. Human rights activists talk of a ploy to avoid responsibility for Khashoggi’s murder.

Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi regime, was assassinated four years ago in the Saudi embassy in Turkey. The crown prince himself denies any involvement in the murder.

US President Joe Biden visited Saudi Arabia in July this year, drawing criticism both inside and outside the US. According to Biden, he confronted the crown prince with Khashoggi’s murder, but according to bin Salman, that didn’t happen.
