1. The device: 2000 – 6500 euros

For the device itself, you pay between 2,000 and 6,500 euros excluding VAT. This is a huge price range. This is due to the large differences in furnace materials, from basic to high-end. You can distinguish three levels of quality:
• Steel sheets with cast iron: 2,000 to 3,000 euros.
• Cast iron with chamotte (baked clay): 3,000 to 4,500 euros.
• Chamotte with vermiculite: 4,500 to 6,500 euros.

Tip: Don’t confuse a pellet stove with a pellet kettle. Unlike a pellet stove, you heat your entire home with a pellet boiler. Read more about the price tag and how this system works here.

period of life

A device made of sheet steel will last from ten to fifteen years. If you pay more, you get up to 25 years. Stromob recommends spending more than €2,500 anyway. Logically: you pay 1,000 to 3,000 euros for a classic wood-burning stove, while a wood-burning stove has high-end electronics. And a complex combustion system, of course.

There are three more reasons to spend more: less noise, higher efficiency and more comfort. Cheap models are in noise category 3: In addition to burning, you can also hear the warm air blower and screwdriver. With noise class 2, the motor makes less noise.

From 3,500 euros you are in noise category 1: without blower, without combustion noise and with a low-noise screw drive. Operation is also more intuitive, with a touch screen instead of buttons.

2. Installation: from 350 to more than 1,500 euros

Just like the price of a device, installation costs also vary widely:
• The current situation, where only the burner is replaced and The flue gas duct remains the same: 350 to 750 euros.
• The position in which the double-walled stainless steel is flexibly placed in the existing stove: 750 to 1500 euros.
• No chimney and air supply. So a new stainless steel or steel flue gas duct is installed and an air source for combustion is provided: from 1,500 euros.

3. Pellets: 240 – 1,600 euros per year

Even before the energy crisis, wood pellets cost an average of 4.8 to 5.5 cents per kWh. Since August 2022 the price has increased to 15 cents per kWh, but in December 2022 the price will drop again towards 7 to 8 cents per kWh.

4. Maintenance: 120 – 230 euros annually

Finally, the cost of maintenance. Their price ranges between 120 and 230 euros. It is better to do this in the first year. After that, most users can do it themselves. The cost of a chimney sweep is from 65 to 110 euros per year.

5. Conclusion?

How much does a pellet stove cost? If we always assume the average price, we are around 6,270 euros. Excluding VAT, but including pellets and initial maintenance.

You can choose from these types of stoves and fireplaces for your home: but how practical and environmentally friendly are they?
