Benzema had to draw a line through his World Cup dream due to a buttock injury. He was going to be out for at least three weeks, but the injury turned out not to be so bad. Meanwhile, he has been training with Real Madrid for a while now.
“I have to think about the team,” Benzema said upon leaving Qatar. National coach Didier Deschamps could call up a new striker, but he didn’t. Benzema’s seat remained vacant.
As a result, the rumor mill started several times. The first time there was speculation about Benzema’s return, those rumors were quickly dismissed. The attacker was on vacation.
Now there are rumors again. Benzema would like to travel to Qatar to participate in the final. He would also have received permission from Real Madrid.
But is that as a spectator or really still as a player? Can he fill in a few minutes for the opening break of a match, for example? In theory yes, but in practice that seems unlikely.
After the semi-finals, a reporter asked Deschamps the question. He rolled his eyes and let out a sigh. “I don’t even want to answer that. Next question? Sorry,” it sounded.
Whether he plays or not, Benzema has a chance of winning a medal. He is still officially on the list of players and therefore entitled to receive an award.
