Oppo aims to have its own smartphone chip before 2024

In 2024, Oppo will release its first smartphone with its own chip.

It’s a rumor that’s been circulating since 2021, but it’s going to be more true than ever: the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo It works on its own SoC (System on a Chip) and will equip its devices with it from 2024.

Rumors and rumours

It was the famous “leaker” Ice Universe who made the claim Twitter. Oppo will have a team of thousands of developers all working on this particular platform at the moment. It is not clear what phones it will be equipped with. Ditto whether this chip will also be used for parent company BBK Electronics’ other brands, such as OnePlus.

Of course, the goal is to become less dependent on outside suppliers. At the moment, Oppo is working with chipsets from both Qualcomm if Media Tech. The rumor that spread two years ago spoke of the Taiwanese TSMC that would produce the chip developed by Oppo. This name also appeared in similar messages last year. But it is not yet known if TSMC is still the partner of choice for Oppo.

Loans

The company is certainly not original with these plans. Google, Samsung and Huawei have already invested in their own chips. In addition to more autonomy, better visibility of performance is of course a good incentive for manufacturers to do as much internal performance of their devices as possible in-house.

It wouldn’t be a real first for Oppo either. In 2021, the company has already come up with Marie Silicone X, an NPU (Neural Processor Unit) chip that was developed using a method developed by TSMC. These slices were mainly for image processing. Given TSMC’s name and its ever-growing name, it’s not surprising that rumors of an SOC also began circulating that same year.
