“It’s a fact: We’re in a space race,” said the former astronaut and Democratic senator. “The fact is, we’re very careful that they don’t go to a place on the moon under the guise of scientific research. And it’s unthinkable to say, ‘Stay away, we’re here, this is our territory.’
Referring to China’s behavior in the South China Sea, Nelson said, “If you doubt that, look at what they did in the Spratly Islands.
Americans on the moon by the end of 2025?
China has announced plans to place tyconauts on the moon by the end of the decade. NASA has recently focused on the Moon, including the recent unmanned Artemis I mission, which plans to send astronauts back by the end of 2025.
According to Nelson, the race for the moon is intensifying and the next two years could decide who wins. “China has made tremendous achievements and progress over the past decade. It is also true that the date of their landing on the moon is approaching,” the US faces delays and budget cuts.
NASA chief fears China wants to claim resource-rich areas on moon “There are only so many places at the south pole of the moon that are suitable for what we now think is water and so on.”
Could America still land on the moon for China? “God willing,” Nelson said.
