CyclocrossWout van Aert won the Duinencross race in Koksijde due to force majeure. Mathieu van der Poel – who was struggling with back problems – crossed the line in second place in just over a minute. Laurens Sweeck finished third.
look. Van Aert: “It’s good to be driving in Koksijde again”
After nearly 11 years of challenging dune fencing at the World Junior Championships, Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel are back at Koksijde Beach. With professionals, not to mention today, they have already had twenty sand duels. The score was 11-9 in favor of Van der Poel.
Both “Big Two” are off to a good start. Only sand specialist Laurens Sweeck was able to deliver and make quite an impression on the opening stage. Van Aert appeared to be the least of the three in the sand, but with five laps to go the Belgian champion accelerated dramatically. He started with Pipisquallos, but then switched to Typhoon tires—a successful move. Van der Poel and Swick saw the stars. Evidently, Fan Art was waiting for the right moment to release his demons.
Van Art had a great day and ran more and more. Van der Poel struggled and suffered back problems again. For Van Aert, this is his sixth victory of the season. It will first appear on Gulghem on Saturday. Van der Poel ignores this cross. On Sunday they look into each other’s eyes again at Zonhoven.
