Chinese researchers have developed an artificial tissue that can help pigs with penile injuries regain erections. According to the researchers, in the future this technology may also be applied to men who have erectile dysfunction due to injuries to their genitals.
The discovery was made by the South China University of Technology in Guangzhou. Site EurekAlert! Investigation reports.
The special synthetic tissue developed by the scientists is similar to the spongy tissue that runs through the shaft of the penis. This tissue is necessary to maintain an erection. More research is needed to see if and when this new technology is also suitable for humans.
In this case, the tissue must be implanted into the penis. But the risk remains that the body will reject and reject the artificial tissue. This problem can be solved by “blending” the synthetic tissue with the patient’s tissue.
Chinese researchers’ discovery may help with erectile dysfunction issues, but it can also be used for men with Peyronie’s disease. In a small group of older men, this can lead to unwanted curvature during an erection.
According to the Chinese team, half of all men between the ages of 40 and 70 have erectile dysfunction to a greater or lesser extent. “This area of research is not receiving much attention, but it fills a great need,” says lead researcher Xuetao Shi.
