IAEA warns for safety around Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant: ‘We are playing with fire’ | Ukraine and Russia war

The International Atomic Energy Agency remains concerned about the “precarious” safety of the nuclear power plant in Ukraine’s Zaporizhia region. In particular, persistent problems with energy supplies increase the risk of an accident, according to the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi.

Grossi said in a statement on Wednesday that the last remaining 750-kilovolt external power line was damaged by the Russian missile strikes on March 1 and the outage has continued regularly since then. “Zaporizhia’s nuclear security remains precarious,” Grossi said. “I call on all parties to abide by the integrity of the plant.”

In emergency situations where external power is lost, Zaporizhia has diesel generators as a “last line of defense” for reactor cooling and other essential nuclear safety and security functions. On March 9, these emergency generators were used for 11 hours after a Russian attack. Grossi no longer wanted to see such scenes. He said, “We are playing with fire.”

Psychological stress

The International Atomic Energy Agency also points to the great pressure on the staff of the power plant. The head of the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency added, “The decrease in the workforce coupled with psychological stress resulting from the ongoing military conflict is affecting the plant’s nuclear safety and security.”

The Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant, the largest in Europe, was captured by Russian military forces at the start of the war and remains under Russian control.
