Brazilian President Calls on US to End War of “Promotion” | Abroad

America must stop “promoting” war in Ukraine. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva advocated this during a visit to China, seeking rapprochement with President Xi Jinping.

According to Lula, Washington and the European Union “need to start talking about peace”. The entire international community can “reassure” Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, that “peace is in the interest of the whole world,” the president declared before a trip to the United Arab Emirates.

Lula, who took over from Jair Bolsonaro in January, is on a two-day visit to China to strengthen economic ties with its main trading partner. He also used the visit to highlight Brazil’s “return” to the international arena and hopes to play a mediating role in the conflict in Ukraine.

Relations with the United States

The center-left leader must strike a delicate balance between the US and China. Lula is already convinced that strengthening ties between Brasilia and Beijing will not affect relations with the United States. He went to America in February.

Arms supply

Lula hopes to unite a group of countries working for peace in Ukraine. However, he did not give any details when questioned about this after his visit to Xi. “Patience is necessary” to engage in dialogue with Putin and Zelensky, he said. “But above all, we need to convince the countries that supply weapons, that promote war, to stop doing so.”
