Motorola Razr 40 (Ultra) unveiled: bigger screen, same price

Motorola has announced not one, but two new foldable phones. The Razr 40 Ultra has improved greatly, while the Razr 40 is relatively affordable. Read it all here!

Read on after the announcement.

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra officially revealed

After many rumors, leaked specifications and images, Motorola Razr 40 Ultra has finally been officially revealed. It is the company’s latest foldable smartphone, the successor to the Razr 2022. The device has a new design with a larger screen on the front.

The so-called QuickView display now measures 3.6 inches, which is a huge step forward. The Razr 2022 sported a 2.7-inch display up front. Due to the larger screen, there is more space to run apps, reply to messages, listen to music via Spotify, and it is even possible to watch movies and series via various streaming services.

It is also possible to play simple games on the screen and set your own live wallpaper and clock. You can also put your favorite apps on a smaller home screen, view your agenda, check the weather forecast, and more.

The QuickView display is not only larger, but it also has a higher refresh rate of 144Hz. This ensures that animations are much smoother than they were in last year’s Motorola Razr. The screen is divided further by the Razr 40 Ultra’s dual cameras and LED flash. There is another camera on the inside of the phone, more on that later.

The “normal” screen is also larger

The screen has also grown inside. The Razr 40 Ultra has a 6.9-inch Full HD display when unfolded. The refresh rate is 165 Hz, the same as the Motorola Edge 40 Pro, for example. There is also support for HDR10+, which should provide more realistic visuals.

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra has IP52 certification, so it can withstand splashes of water. The device runs a “clean” version of Android 13 and can handle Motorola’s Ready For platform. This makes it possible, for example, to use the Razr as a webcam when making video calls on a laptop.

faster hardware

Under the hood of the Razr 40 Ultra is the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip, which is the second fastest processor at the moment. Motorola adds 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The battery is 3,800mAh, which is 300mAh more than last year’s Razr 2022. However, it remains tight if you compare the battery capacity to that of other high-end Android phones.

The Razr can quickly charge at a maximum of 30W. What’s new is the presence of wireless charging, so you don’t have to fumble with cables. Unfortunately, it takes a long time to wirelessly charge the Razr 40 Ultra, as that’s no faster than 5W.

Then the cameras. As mentioned, the Razr 40 Ultra has two on the back: a 12MP main camera and a 13MP wide-angle lens. The main camera has a large f/1.5 aperture lens, which should ensure it captures extra light. There is also optical image stabilization and the wide angle lens also acts as a macro camera.

Razr 40 is more affordable

Motorola also comes with the regular Razr 40, which is hundreds of euros cheaper than the Ultra. The company had to make some concessions to bring the price down. For example, the front screen is much smaller (1.5 inches), though you can still use it to check notifications and take selfies.

The normal screen size is 6.9 inches with a full HD resolution of 2640 x 1080 pixels and a refresh rate of 144Hz. In this area, the Razr 40 differs slightly from the Razr 40 Ultra. The main camera is different and takes pictures at 64 megapixels. There is also a 13MP wide angle lens and a 32MP selfie camera.

Moreover, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chip is less powerful. We mainly see this processor in mid-range smartphones, such as the recently unveiled HTC U23 Pro and the slightly older Xiaomi 13 Lite. The Razr 40 also has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

The Razr 40 has a larger battery than its more expensive sibling. The battery has a capacity of 4200mAh and can be charged at a maximum speed of 30W. Wireless charging is available and thanks to the IP52 certification, the foldable phone can withstand splashes of water.

update policy

As mentioned earlier, the Motorola Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra both run Android 13. Motorola puts a MyUX shell on top of that, which adds all kinds of functionality. However, Android has not been modified much, so the software remains “clean”.

Motorola promises to give the Razr phones three major Android upgrades: Android 14, 15, and 16. In addition, the smartphones will receive four years of security patches that prevent hackers from gaining access and fixing problems. These updates appear every two months.
