Göran Vliegen and Sander Geli are busy cobblestones in Paris. The Belgian duo reached the semi-finals after defeating Argentine Gonzalez and Molteni in two sets. It’s the first time our compatriots have come this far in a Grand Slam tournament.

Sander Gillet and Joran Vliegen, ranked 40th and 41st respectively, won the quarterfinals with two sets 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) against Argentine Maximo Gonzalez (ATP 31) and Andrés Molteni (ATP 25), the 14th seed.

In the second set, Gillet and Vliegen came back from 0-3 down. For 32-year-old Geli and 29-year-old Vliegen, this is the first time they have reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam in doubles. In 2022 and 2021 they reached the third round in Paris.

In order to secure a place in the final, the Limburgers will play against the Dutch-German tandem Matwe Middelkoop (ATP 23) / Andreas Mies (ATP 29) or the Salvadoran-Dutch duo Marcelo Arevalo (ATP 6) / Jean-Julien Roger (ATP). 6).

Vliegen: “The best result of our career”

“We don’t really realize it yet,” said Jöran Vliegen. “Semi-finals in a major tournament! We are very happy with the level we have reached.”

“We came back from a break in the back and stayed calm enough in the tie-break to win in straight sets. But I think we deserved to win. We were aggressive and present in the net.”

“It is clear that this is the best result of our career,” said Fliegen. “The semi-final of a major tournament is a giant step for us. Last year we lost in the super break in the third round.”

“We were close to it a lot of times, but it just didn’t work out in our favour. That’s the kind of performance we’ve been working towards all year. It gives us a real boost. And of course we want more.”
