Over a billion people are infatuated with Wes Anderson on social media. TikTok and Instagram are filled with videos reminiscent of the director’s style. Its makers consciously copy hobby horses: pastel colors, symmetrical compositions, picturesque images. Why the big fuss? Jonas Lips, a TikTok journalist, explains:

You may have already seen it: on Instagram or TikTok you will find many videos in which people pretend to be in a Wes Anderson movie. They show images of a vacation in Spain, a workout, lunch, and a normal day at the office,…but in the filmmaker’s signature style.

On TikTok, videos with the hashtag have been getting popular #wisanderson Already more than 1.6 billion views. One of the first to start this trend was a photographer from Brooklyn, 26-year-old Ava Williams. Captured her train ride from Connecticut to New York. Many of his films deal with similar themes, such as loss, impossible love, or difficult family relationships. “Although Wes Anderson is known for his unique and aesthetically pleasing style on film,” Jonas Lips, author and TikTok journalist at HLN, responded. “All of his films have recognizable visual elements such as harmonious compositions, vibrant color palettes, and a nostalgic atmosphere.”

Lips continues, “This visual appeal appeals to a lot of people and inspires them to create similar videos on TikTok.”

People like to pretend to be the ‘main character’ in their lives.

Why is it now such a noise to copy the director? Jonas Lips has an explanation for that, too. “The trend really exploded when Wes Anderson released the trailer for ‘Asteroid City,’ his new movie that comes out in our country on June 14.”
