King Charles (74) and Queen Camilla (75) claim their first wins as a royal couple at Royal Ascot. On Thursday they saw their horse Desert Hero cross the finish line first. The British media saw this as leading to great happiness in the royal box. Pictures show that Charles and Camilla shed a tear.
Charles had a huge smile on his face as he congratulated champion desert rider Tom Marquand, and trainer William Hagas. The royal couple then received the accompanying cup from the Duke of Kent.
The victory may have had additional meaning for Charles and Camilla because Queen Elizabeth was a regular visitor to Royal Ascot and had been involved in horse racing her entire life. Zara Tindall, daughter of Charles’ sister Princess Anne, thinks Elizabeth would have been proud.

“It’s new for them. Like all horse owners here, they have a dream and making it happen is incredible,” Tyndale told ITV. Charles and Camilla still have a long way to go to overtake Elizabeth: she has won no fewer than 24 times at Royal Ascot.
