The United States will host the Club World Cup in 2025, with 32 participants for the first time, it was decided at a meeting of world football association FIFA. The tournaments last for about three weeks and are held in June and July.
The Club World Cup is a good test for the USA for the World Cup a year later. The event is organized by the US along with Mexico and Canada. The same stadiums can be used for the Club World Cup and FIFA can also allocate matches to Mexico and Canada.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced at the end of last year that the field of participants for the Club World Cup had been expanded to 32 clubs. In the current format, only seven teams participate, the six winners of continental tournaments and the champion of the host country.
‘Expect big success’
According to FIFA, the event should become one of the leading competitions for clubs in men’s football. “We see the United States as the best host to shape this tournament in its new form,” Infantino said. “The infrastructure is good and the passion of the fans is huge. We expect a big success.”
The exact dates, venues, schedule and qualification procedure for the expanded World Cup are still unknown. FIFA had earlier announced that the continental champions would get a ticket to the World Cup for the period 2021-2024.
With this, teams including past Champions League winners Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City can prepare for the World Cup. The tournament will be held every four years from 2025.
