Even before she was allowed to lift the European Championship trophy as captain of the Belgian Cats, Emma Messemann was called to the podium for an individual award immediately after the final victory over Spain. With great humility I got the MVP (Most Valuable Player) trophy from the last European Championship.
Is the best player in the European Championship at the age of 30 also the best player in the world?
“She’s definitely one of the best players in the world, but we can’t say she’s the best,” Dennis Zheit tells D-Tribune.
“We can’t forget Breanna Stewart or Diana Taurasi (both from the US). There are so many great players in this country.”
“Emma Messeman would also say to herself that she may be placed on the same level as these players, but she certainly should not be placed above these women.”
“But Meisman can certainly join the table of the best women’s basketball players.”
It’s not just her individual skills as a basketball player that make her special. Its mindset also drives its teams forward. Basketball is, and always will be, primarily a team sport.
Dennis Chait compares Emma Meeseman to Tim Duncan or Nikola Jokic. Jokic was the NBA Most Valuable Player in 2021 and 2022 and the MVP of this year’s NBA Finals. Tim Dukan was MVP in 2002 and 2003 and NBA Finals MVP in 1999, 2003 and 2005.
“Duncan was one of the ten best basketball players of all time, but he’s always mediocre. He didn’t care about individual championships. Same with Jokic, who led Denver to win the title this year.”
“For them, it’s the team’s performance that matters.”
“After winning the European Championship final, I saw real feelings with Emma Messemann. It’s easy to say that the team is the most important thing, but with her you can see that it’s real.”
“And if your best player shows a lot of commitment, then you can just keep up with him as a fellow player. That guarantees a good mentality in the Belgian team.”
“Subtly charming internet specialist. Avid writer. Friendly alcohol guru. Music ninja. Devoted social media fanatic.”
