The new Volkswagen Tiguan: more electrified than ever, but not yet an electric car

This is currently Volkswagen’s most successful model in the world: the Tiguan. Volkswagen has produced 1.2 million units in the past two years alone. More than 7.5 million buyers have chosen this SUV since its debut in 2007. In its world premiere, Volkswagen now presents the newly developed Tiguan, and thus the third generation of the best-selling vehicle.

What catches the eye in the design of the new Tiguan is the front end with a high and powerful appearance. Integrated here: new, very flat LED headlights. In the middle, the classic radiator grille has been replaced by a glass-covered crossbar with an optional integrated LED strip. The actual openings for the radiator grille are located in the bumper. On either side of the bumper, there are so-called “air curtains” to ensure optimal airflow. The finely painted façade emphasizes the fact that cXThe value has been improved from 0.33 to 0.28.

The new Tiguan is 30 mm longer (4,539 mm) than its predecessor, but with an additional 4 mm (without roof rails) it is barely higher (1,639 mm). Width (1842 mm) and wheelbase (2680 mm) remained the same. The trunk volume of the new generation shows how well space is used: although the SUV has barely become longer, the loading volume of the versions with eTSI, TSI and TDI engines has increased by 37 liters to 652 litres.

Digital cockpit

Volkswagen has completely redesigned the interior of the Tiguan. Thanks to better materials and workmanship and optional details such as decorative stitching and contrasting piping in the surfaces, the usual class boundaries have been eliminated. More than ever, the new Tiguan is positioning itself as the more compact sister model to the luxury Touareg, according to the German carmaker. Furthermore, the MIB4’s on-board components integrate into a new cockpit landscape: easy to operate, constantly connected, sleek and intelligently designed.

The modules include a new digital cockpit (anti-glare digital instruments in the form of horizontal dials), a large infotainment screen with a completely new menu structure and graphic design, a new head-up display as well and a new multi-function Driving Experience switch with integrated OLED display. The new IDA voice assistant also allows several vehicle and infotainment functions, such as volume level, to be controlled using natural speech.

100 km electricity

Volkswagen has developed plug-in hybrid powertrains for the Tiguan. Thanks to a pure 19.7 kWh battery, the purely electric driving range of the Tiguan eHybrid, which starts with a system power of 204 PS and 272 PS, has been increased to around 100 km. In addition, Volkswagen will offer the SUV with two 48-volt mild-hybrid engines, generating 130 hp and 150 hp, with automatic cylinder deactivation (ACT). The Tiguan eTSI combines high efficiency with excellent starting performance. All four hybrid models feature front-wheel drive.

Finally, the conventional turbo-petrol (TSI) and two turbo-diesel (TDI) engines remain on board. All are 2.0 four-cylinder engines. The TSI engines generate 204 hp and 265 hp, while the TDI engine generates 150 hp and 193 hp. The 150kW and 195kW Tiguan 2.0 TSI and the 142kW Tiguan 2.0 TDI have 4MOTION all-wheel drive as standard.
