Nigerians protest mysterious death of pop star | outside

Thousands of Nigerians took to the streets on Thursday to express their anger over the mystery of Illyrio Lua Aloba, the popular pop star popularly known as Mohabad. Aloba died last Tuesday at the age of 27 in hospital. The cause of death, initially given as “unknown illness”, is disputed in public opinion, leading to his body being exhumed for an autopsy.

Aloba, who grew up in poverty, was very popular in Nigeria as an interpreter of Afrobeat, a regional genre that combines different types of traditional and modern music. In his lyrics, he often referred to his background and called himself a “survivor.”

His death came as a shock to his fans, many of whom believed he had been murdered. In response to the protests, the Nigerian authorities decided to examine Aloba’s remains for traces of crime. But Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu called on the crowds to remain calm.

“I appeal to all friends and lovers of the deceased to remain calm and refrain from making inflammatory statements and drawing biased conclusions on this matter,” the governor said.
