The renovation of Adolf Hitler’s birthplace in Braunau, Austria has begun. Safety work was carried out on Monday before the actual renovations began. This was stated by a spokesman for the Ministry of Interior.

The renewal aims to prevent neo-Nazis from visiting the region on the border with Bavaria as a place of pilgrimage. The house where the Nazi dictator was born in 1889 will have two new facades by 2025.

From 2026, the state-owned building will be used as a police station and to train police officers in human rights. Several groups criticized that plan and proposed other options. Recently, the Friends of Yad Vashem Holocaust Remembrance Society proposed organizing a permanent exhibition at Hitler’s home about the people who saved Jews from Nazi persecution.

The Interior Ministry rejected this idea partly for security reasons, and instead proposed holding the exhibition at various police stations.
