Zizo Burgess retires in Antwerp in the first qualifying round of the European Open | ATP Antwerp

David Goffin has already confirmed his place at the head table. But will another Belgian join him?

In qualifications, 6 citizens usually look for a ticket. But Kemer Kobejans had to withdraw last time because he had not yet fully recovered from an injury to the intercostal muscles.

Joris De Loor played the Challenger final in Bratislava today (and lost), which meant he also had to send his cat to Antwerp.

Joining us today in Antwerp: Zizo Burgess (ATP-181). Three years ago he won his first ever ATP match at the European Open.

A trick that Burgess will not be able to repeat, as he lost today in the first qualifying round to Frenchman Tetouan Drouge (ATP-159): 7-5, 7-6 (7/9), 6-2. Side note on that is that Burgess has been struggling with his wrist in recent months.

Gauthier Unclein (ATP-206) got the job done against top-ranked American Maxime Cressy (ATP-112): 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7/1). To get a place at the main table, he only has to get past Frenchman Giovanni Mpiche Pericard (ATP-218).

Alexander Blok (ATP-771) followed Onklin’s example and sent Serbian Hamad Medjidovic (ATP-105) home after two sets.

Gilles Arnaud Belli (ATP-646) is the latest Belgian to take action. His opponent is Spaniard Pablo Lamas Ruiz (ATP-132).
