AutoWeek forum member D oh left the 599 behind to photograph the real 56-year-old Maserati Ghibli. A choice we can of course live with, because what a picture! A masterpiece by the famous car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, who was still working for Ghia. He was not yet thirty years old when Ghibli put to paper.

In terms of design, the Ghibli was an important precursor to many sports cars of the 1970s and into the 1980s, with its retractable headlights located atop the long nose and roofline extending all the way to the rear. It was a big step after the success of the Maserati Mistal. The Ghibli looked sleek and fast. He had to achieve the latter with a big V8 in the nose. First it was a 4.7-litre block, followed by the Ghibli SS with a massive 4.9-litre model. Good for 310 hp and 335 hp respectively. Even today that is still a lot of power, and in the late 1960s it was really a lot. For comparison: The Jaguar E-type of the time produced just under 270 hp from its six. With the base 4.7 engine, the Maserati Ghibli reached a speed of 250 km/h and accelerated to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds. The Ghibli SS continued to travel at speeds of up to 280 km/h. Of course they didn’t do it without a soft drink for a long time. That’s why there were at least two 50-litre tanks that could be filled on either side of the car.

The example we have here, thanks to D Oh, is a regular Ghibli coupe from its first year of manufacture, and the SS didn’t come to market until two years later. It’s one of the first Ghibli cars ever, which makes it a bit more special. The condition of the car in no way indicates that it is a vintage car, as we are undoubtedly dealing with a car that has been carefully restored and protected. We can’t blame the owner for double parking in this case. The fact that the Ghibli is standing in public (albeit covered) is actually quite a thing. This is a car worth more than 250 thousand euros. And let’s be honest; Such an amount is quite understandable in this case, right?
